BIOGRAPHY

 A native of Lenoir, North Carolina, Joanna began playing piano at age 6 and oboe at age 10. She began her oboe studies with Alicia Chapman at Appalachian State University, then earned Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University where she studied with Jane Marvine (English horn, Baltimore Symphony). Joanna then completed further study with Stéphane Rancourt (principal oboe, the Halle Orchestra) as a full-scholarship student in the continuing education program at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) in Glasgow, Scotland.

Joanna has participated in the Brevard Music Center Summer Festival, Eastern Music Festival, and Las Vegas Music Festival. She has performed in such venues as New York City's Alice Tully Hall and Glasgow's City Halls, and shared the stage with a variety of stars representing a wide range of styles and genres including Hilary Hahn, Leon Fleischer, James DePriest, Marina Piccinini, The Irish Tenors, Ben Folds, The Wailers, America, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Paul Anka, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Ricky Skaggs, and Boyz II Men.

As an arts administrator, Joanna has experience in a variety of roles, including operations, education/outreach, research, marketing, and planning. She has worked for Scottish Opera (Scotland's national opera company), Eastern Music Festival, and the Wake Forest University Department of Music. Joanna also holds a Master of Library Science degree from North Carolina Central University.

Joanna maintains a small studio of private oboe students, and in recent years her students have placed into all-district honors band, all-state honors band, and all-state honors orchestra.

In 2023, in partnership with bassoonist and colleague Cory Jones, Joanna launched the North Carolina Double Reed Company, a small business dedicated to providing oboists and bassoonists in the Carolinas and all over the country with top-quality handmade reeds at affordable prices. In addition to offering a variety of reeds suitable for all levels from total beginner to experienced professional, NCDRC is commited to fostering a friendly and supportive atmosphere in the double reed community.
